Under the banner “Dawn of a New Era,” the Motor Company made a global announcement today about new models added to the 2024 Harley-Davidson lineup. This year marks the 25th anniversary of H-D’s Custom Vehicle Operations division, and in addition to the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide announced last June, the Motor Company will offer a CVO Road Glide ST and a CVO Pan America adventure bike. Harley-Davidson’s popular Street Glide and Road Glide baggers have also been updated.

Two of Harley-Davidson’s best-selling bagger models – the Street Glide and the Road Glide – now feature more streamlined bodywork first seen on their CVO counterparts. Both are powered by a Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-Twins with a revised cooling system, and new for 2024 are selectable ride modes: Road, Sport, Rain, and Custom.

Convenience and comfort have also been improved with an upgraded infotainment available through a new 12.3-inch TFT color display, additional rear suspension travel, and a revised seat.

Harley-Davidson says the new CVO Road Glide ST is the company’s “quickest, fastest, and most sophisticated performance bagger.” The West Coast-style bagger is powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 121 High Output V-Twin, an engine exclusive to this model that churns out 127 hp and 145 lb-ft of asphalt-buckling torque. Selectable ride modes include Road, Sport, Track, Track Plus, Rain, and multiple Custom modes.

Lightweight materials, including mufflers with titanium shells, an oil pan made of composite, and forged carbon fiber used in the muffler end caps, front fender, seat cowl, and tank console, along with revised wheels and wave-style front brake rotors, help keep dry weight to 800 lb, 25 lb less than the CVO Road Glide.

The CVO Road Glide ST is equipped with fully adjustable Showa suspension, with an inverted 47mm 1×1 fork and dual rear shocks with remote reservoirs, and Brembo braking components.

A full suite of infotainment is powered by Skyline OS, and a large color touchscreen replaces all analog instrumentation and most switches. Premium audio includes a 500-watt amplifier and Rockford Fosgate Stage II 6.5-inch fairing speakers.

The CVO Road Glide ST will be available in two paint schemes: Golden White Pearl or Raven Metallic. In addition to CVO 25th Anniversary graphics, a Screamin’ Eagle graphic on the fairing sides and fuel tank is inspired by the Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson Factory motorcycles raced in the MotoAmerica King Of The Baggers series.

Following up on the success of Triumph’s other middleweights, including the Trident 660 roadster and the Tiger Sport 660 adventure sport-tourer, Triumph has revealed a new Triple-powered middleweight sportbike for 2024, the Triumph Daytona 660.

At the unveiling of the Daytona 660, Alastair Fairgrieve, Triumph’s global product marketing manager, said the name was originally chosen to honor Buddy Elmore’s victory on a Triumph in the 1966 Daytona 200, where Elmore came from the 46th on the grid to win the race.

The name has appeared in various iterations of Triumph motorcycles over the subsequent years and returns in 2024 with the Daytona 660, which features a liquid-cooled 660cc inline-Triple with DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder, and a 240-degree firing order. It makes a claimed 94 hp at 11,250 rpm (17% higher than the Trident 660), with redline at 12,650 rpm, and 51 lb-ft of torque at 8,250 rpm (9% more than the Trident), with more than 80% of the torque available from 3,125 rpm.

The bike has a 6-speed gearbox, throttle-by-wire, a slip/assist clutch, and 3-into-1 exhaust with a low stainless-steel silencer. Triumph’s Shift Assist is available as an accessory fit for clutchless up- and downshifts.

Stuart Wood, chief engineer of concept and electrical at Triumph, said the Dayton 660 is focused for “real-world use.”

“Everything we do inspires us,” Wood said. “(With) everything we do at the highest level … we’re learning, and we’re getting more into the engine. We’re looking for better economy, cleaner, and more performance all the time. And I think we’ve delivered fairly well on this one.”

See all of Rider‘s Triumph coverage here.

The Triumph Daytona 660 has three ride modes – Sport, Road and Rain – each offering a different throttle response and level of traction control intervention, with Sport mode geared toward more aggressive road riding or track sessions. The traction control system can be turned off for riders who prefer complete freedom from electronic intervention, and a new Emergency Deceleration Warning system activates the hazard lights to alert other drivers during heavy braking.

2024 Triumph Daytona 660

Stopping power comes from twin 4-piston radial calipers biting 310mm floating discs up front and a single-piston sliding caliper and 220 fixed disc in the rear. ABS is standard. An inverted nonadjustable Showa SFF-BP (Separate Function Fork-Big Piston) fork provides 4.3 inches of travel, and a Showa rear monoshock offers 5.1 inches of travel and preload adjustability. When asked about the lack of adjustment on the front fork, Triumph Chief Product Officer Steve Sargent said that when supersport bikes evolved to become more track-focused, they became more tech- and spec-laden.

2024 Triumph Daytona 660

“The price point moved up to a point where the (middleweight) class really kind of disappeared because they got to a price point where they were not that far away from the cost of going to a larger capacity machine,” he said. “But they weren’t delivering the same kind of performance.”

Sargent said it became a question of delivering the balance between the specification and the price that a customer really wants.

“So that’s the way we’ve ended up with this bike,” he said. “We think this really hits the mark.”

2024 Triumph Daytona 660

Ergonomics also reflect the idea of “real-world use.” Clip-on bars are positioned above the top yoke, and footpegs have been moved slightly up and back for a balance of comfort and cornering clearance. Separate rider and passenger seats, with a rider seat height of 31.9 inches and a narrow stand-over make the Daytona 660 manageable for riders of all sizes, and an accessory low seat is also available, lowering the seat height almost an inch to 30.9 inches. The bike rides on five-spoke cast aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin’s new Power 6 tires.

2024 Triumph Daytona 660

The Daytona 660 has twin LED headlights that incorporate a central air intake, as well as a contoured LED taillight. The bike has a color TFT screen integrated into a white-on-black LCD display that is compatible with the accessory fit My Triumph Connectivity System, which enables turn-by-turn navigation plus phone and music interaction.

The 2024 Triumph Daytona 660 will come in Carnival Red, Satin Granite, and Snowdonia White starting at $9,195, available in dealers in March 2024.

Triumph Motorcycles British Invasion Tour

On Tuesday, Jan. 9, Triumph Motorcycles America kicks off a 20-city tour that will showcase an impressive array of all-new motorcycles. In 2024, Triumph is introducing an incredible amount of all-new motorcycles and is poised to make a major impact in the North American motorcycle market, reminiscent of when British rock bands took America by storm in the ’60s.

At every event, Triumph enthusiasts will gather for an exclusive one-night-only first look at the new 2024 models, which are not yet in dealerships, while also enjoying live entertainment, a variety of activities, and some light food and beverages.

“It’s been a few years since Triumph has planned a tour like this,” said Adam VanderVeen, marketing director for Triumph Motorcycles America, “but with a lineup like Triumph is bringing for 2024, the time is right to host a series of new model release parties like only Triumph can, because every one of these game-changing new motorcycles deserves to be showcased. In addition to offering enthusiasts the chance to see the latest new models, the best part of these tour events is creating a premium brand experience for our owners and fans to come out and enjoy an evening together as a Triumph community.”

Continuing in their mission of responsibly creating off-highway routes for adventure and dual-sport motorcycle travel, the nonprofit Backcountry Discovery Routes organization has released its 2023 Economic Impact Study white paper, which reports more than $60 million dollars in boosts to local economies in proximity to BDR routes. Of particular interest was the impact on smaller rural communities, where the increase in tourism dollars has helped offset declines in other industries such as mining or forestry. For more information, read the press release below.

Backcountry Discovery Routes BDR

SEATTLE – Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR), the nonprofit organization dedicated to developing adventure riding opportunities across the U.S., just released its comprehensive Economic Impact Study white paper.  The report underscores the role played by BDR riders in bolstering local economies, with BDR-related spending creating an annual economic impact of over $60 million across all BDR routes.

To access the complete economic impact study white paper and learn more about Backcountry Discovery Routes, visit the Economic Impact Study page on the BDR website.

Conducted in partnership with the University of Wyoming’s Center for Business and Economic Analysis (CBEA), the study examined visitor spending patterns among motorcyclists traveling on BDR routes. Key findings were derived from economic impact calculations, utilizing state-specific multipliers, industry-specific margins, estimates of out-of-state visitors, and average spending per industry and state.

Backcountry Discovery Routes BDR

One of the standout conclusions from the study is the substantial positive impact BDR has on small rural communities. As the organization continues to create new BDR routes, it brings a surge of economic activity to these areas in the form of tourism. The influx of commerce extends to various sectors, including hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, parks, and more. Many of these rural communities have faced economic challenges due to declines in traditional industries such as mining and forestry, and BDR’s initiatives have proven to be an important source of new tourism revenue for these remote local economies.

Backcountry Discovery Routes BDR

Inna Thorn, executive director at Backcountry Discovery Routes, said that many states are looking for new outdoor recreation opportunities to help diversify their economies and bring new tourism dollars to local communities.

“This economic impact study underscores the substantial positive influence BDR has on the communities we travel through,” she said. “More than just an advocate for off-highway motorcycling, BDR is a catalyst for economic growth in rural communities along our routes. As we continue to expand our network of routes, we are committed to making a lasting and positive difference in these communities, while educating our riders about safe and respectful travel on public lands and in local communities.”

Related: Backcountry Discovery Routes | Ep. 58 Rider Magazine Insider Podcast

In addition, BDR efforts are also growing the sport by creating new adventure riders and driving motorcycle sales. The study found that BDR riders generated $9.6 million in motorcycle sales in 2022. BDR riders are not just buying motorcycles, they are also spending significant dollars on related products and services to prepare for a BDR ride.

Backcountry Discovery Routes BDR

BDR invites all interested parties, including policymakers, local officials, and motorcycling enthusiasts, to explore the full economic impact study white paper. By understanding the tangible benefits that BDR routes bring to rural areas, communities and stakeholders can work together to harness the potential for sustainable growth and development of adventure motorcycle tourism.

About Backcountry Discovery Routes

Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR) is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization that creates off-highway routes for adventure and dual-sport motorcycle travel. The organization’s work includes promoting rider education and safety campaigns, driving economic relief to rural communities, and encouraging responsible motorcycle travel in the backcountry. Through the careful investment of funds and working with land managers and other public benefit organizations, BDR seeks to keep remote public roads open for motorcycling for generations to come.

BDR delivers turn-key trip planning resources to the community including GPS tracks, digital maps, travel information, route condition updates, YouTube videos, Q&As, and other information – all available 24/7 on the Backcountry Discovery Routes website. The organization relies on the generosity of donors and a team of volunteers and ambassadors who contribute thousands of hours each year to help carry out this mission.

Since 2010, BDR has created routes in Washington, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico, Nevada, the Mid-Atlantic region, Southern California, the North-East region, Wyoming, and Oregon and the soon-to-be-released Northern, California project. In 2022, BDR introduced a new concept of shorter, BDR-style routes that loop called BDR-X. Current BDR-X routes include Red Desert, Wyoming; PA Wilds, Pennsylvania; Steens Mountain & Alvord Desert, Oregon; and now the Black Hills, South Dakota.

We are thrilled, yes, thrilled, to announce a momentous first in the 100-plus-year history of Benelli. Its motorcycles are now distributed in North America by Keeway Group, co-owner and exclusive worldwide corporate manager of the Benelli brand. In short, Benelli is finally represented by Benelli in the North American markets.

Founded by the six Benelli brothers in 1911, in the seaside city of Pesaro, Italy, the original Benelli factory is now the Benelli Museum, still fully owned by the brand. Originally conceived as a brand of passion, Benelli soon went racing with youngest brother Antonio “Tonino” quickly achieving many victories. Racing in Italy evolved into racing internationally, with Benelli earning two GP world championships. Every year Benelli and the city of Pesaro celebrate Benelli Week, a tradition that began 13 years ago at the company’s 100th anniversary in 2011.

Keeway Group, the corporate manager of the Benelli brand, also has other brands to provide dealers a robust array of two-wheeled vehicles. Keeway’s growing complementary line of scooters and small-displacement motorcycles will also be offered in the U.S. market, at a later date in 2024.

We put the Transalp through its on-road and off-road paces during a two-day, 250-mile test amidst the vibrant autumn foliage of central Pennsylvania. Our route included the rugged Section 4 of the BDR-X PA Wilds and challenging twists near State College.

2024 BMW R 1300 GS
Our off-road test was brief, but it provided a favorable first impression of how the R 1300 GS handles on rocky, uneven terrain.

BMW Motorrad pulled out all the stops in 2023 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its first production motorcycle (the R 32). It launched 100 Years Editions of the R 18 cruiser and R nineT roadster, it hosted its first-ever BMW Motorrad Days Americas at the Barber Vintage Festival, and on Sept. 28, exactly 100 years after the R 32 was unveiled at the Berlin Motor Show, it introduced the 2024 BMW R 1300 GS, the latest version of its bestselling model.

With a pedigree that goes back 43 years to the original R 80 G/S, which introduced the Gelände/Straße (“off-road/road”) concept and started the adventure bike revolution, the R 1300 GS is new from the ground up. Only the butterfly valves and a few bolts and connectors carry over from the R 1250 GS.

Can-Am Road Warrior Ride for Veterans

Can-Am and the Road Warrior Foundation (RWF), recently came together to host an unforgettable “Adventure Therapy” ride that covered nearly 2,000 miles aboard Can-Am Spyder 3-wheel vehicles. This year marked the 10th Annual Road Warrior Ride, which gives veterans the opportunity to disconnect from their day-to-day life and experience the incredible healing power of riding the open road, all completely free of charge.

Related: 2023 Can-Am Ryker Rally Review | Road Test

The veterans were selected by RWF from a pool of hundreds of applicants, and as is the focus of every RWF adventure, they were all post-9/11 veterans with various injuries, both physical and mental. Something else they all shared: a craving for adventure and a need to inject some excitement in their lives. Riding is a perfect recipe for a group of likeminded strangers with so much in common.

Can-Am Road Warrior Ride for Veterans

“Can-Am has been the title sponsor of the Road Warrior Foundation since it was established in 2013, proudly helping to enable its mission to provide Adventure Therapy to U.S. Military veterans,” said Martin Ethier, Global Marketing Director, Can-Am. “We firmly believe that the open road is open to all, and through this sponsorship, we are able to bring that to life for a group of incredibly deserving riders.”

Prior to hitting the road, the group gathered in Lake George, NY, where they spent time getting to know each other and received a hero’s welcome from more than 300 Can-Am owners at SpyderQuest, an annual Can-Am owners event in beautiful upstate New York. Several of the riders had only recently acquired their motorcycle license, and most had very little experience riding in a group, so prior to the main event, Can-Am and RWF representatives did some closed-course and classroom training on the fleet of vehicles provided by Can-Am. Then it was time to hit the open road.

“Can-Am 3-wheel vehicles are the only vehicles that allow us to do what we do because it’s so easy to learn to ride,” said Stephen Berger, co-founder of the Road Warrior Foundation and U.S. Air Force veteran. “BRP provides us a fleet of vehicles that we keep all over the country, so for this ride and other smaller ones we have throughout the year, we’re able to get veterans of all skill levels out riding quickly by putting them through the Can-Am Rider Education Program.”

As always, once the wheels were rolling, the excitement was undeniable from all. The veterans experienced amazing views, great roads, and landmarks such as the National Baseball Hall of Fame in NY, the Flight 93 National Memorial in PA, and the National Museum of the USAF in OH. Undoubtedly, though, one of the biggest highlights was a Can-Am off-road experience at Badlands Off-Road Park in Attica, Indiana, where Can-Am dealer, Attica Motorsports, hosted the group while they enjoyed riding Can-Am Maverick, Defender, and Commander off-road vehicles through the park’s 1,400+ acres.

In addition to providing the fleet of vehicles, Can-Am also gave the riders a full suite of riding gear to cover the various climates they covered on their way from New York, through Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, and ultimately concluding at a Can-Am owners’ event called, “Spyders in the Ozarks,” with more than 300 Can-Am riders welcoming them as they rode into Nixa, MO.

Ultimate Driving Museum BMW 100 Years Exhibit

The Ultimate Driving Museum of the BMW CCA Foundation in Greer, South Carolina, celebrates the 100th anniversary of BMW Motorrad with an exhibit titled “BMW Motorcycles: A Century of Innovation,” which runs through January 20, 2024. Over 57 rare and historically significant two- and four-wheeled motorcycle-powered vehicles are on display, taking the visitor on a historical tour from the very first 1923 BMW R 32 through the latest 2023 100 Years Edition motorcycles.

The exhibit highlights the world-leading technical innovations, racing victories, world records, and the pure passion that has driven BMW’s motorcycle division to this day.

In December 1922, BMW chief designer Max Friz put the first full-scale BMW motorcycle on the drawing board. At its heart was a 494 cc, 8.5 hp, air-cooled two-cylinder, four-stroke boxer engine. The first BMW motorcycle, the R 32, was unveiled in September 1923 at the German Motor Show in Berlin. Production began that same month in an area of the BMW engine works on the edge of the Munich’s Oberwiesenfeld airfield. Just 56 motorcycles were built that first year.  Those humble beginnings of BMW motorcycle production launched an unprecedented success story that has spanned a century.

The BMW motorcycles on display at The Ultimate Driving Museum include a selection of prewar singles and boxer twins, postwar street and racing machines, including the 1938 R 51 Super Sport raced by Tim Reid in the 1939 Isle of Man TT, the world championship-winning 1958 Fath Kneeler sidecar racer, and Reg Pridmore’s 1976 AMA Superbike championship-winning R 90 S, plus a world-traveling R 80 G/S and other assorted rarities from the 100-year span of BMW Motorcycle history.

The Ultimate Driving Museum is located across the street from BMW Plant Spartanburg, the largest BMW Group production plant in the world, and just down the road from the BMW Performance Driving School and U.S. Rider Academy.

The 2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+ is a new “crossover” motorcycle that combines the engine performance and chassis of a sport-tourer with the upright stance and long-travel suspension of an adventure bike. Think of it as the love child of a GSX-S1000GT+ and a V-Strom 1050. It’s also a direct competitor for the BMW S 1000 XR, Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ and Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE LT+.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
The Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+ has more suspension travel than a GSX-S1000GT but less than a V-Strom 1050. The taller suspension and lower footpegs increase legroom.

The GSX-S1000GX+ features Suzuki’s first electronic suspension system, which is integrated into the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) electronics suite. Available in the spring of 2024, the GSX-S1000GX+ will retail for $18,499.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
The GSX-S1000GX+ is the first Suzuki to offer electronically adjustable suspension. The system is made by Showa.

Sharing an engine with the GSX-S1000 sportbike and GSX-S1000GT+ sport-tourer, the GX+ is powered by a long-stroke 999cc inline-Four adapted from the GSX-R1000 K5 (2005-2008) and retuned to make it more suitable for the street. When we tested a 2022 GSX-S1000, it made 136 hp at 10,200 rpm and 73 lb-ft of torque at 9,300 rpm on Jett Tuning’s rear-wheel dyno. Camshaft profiles were revised to decrease lift and valve overlap in an effort to reduce emissions and improve rideability.

Equipped with throttle-by-wire and a six-axis IMU, the GSX-S1000GX+ features the most comprehensive Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) electronics suite yet. It includes Suzuki Drive Mode Selector Alpha (SDMS-α) with three ride modes (Active, Basic, and Comfort) that have presets for throttle response, traction control, and suspension damping.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
As fetching as the Triton Blue color is (European model shown), the only color option in the U.S. is Pearl Matte Shadow Green. Handguards are standard.

Developed by Showa, the new the Suzuki Advanced Electronic Suspension (SAES) combines the SFF-CATM inverted telescopic fork, BFRC-lite link-style rear shock, and electronic damping control with four modes (Hard, Medium, Soft, and a customizable User mode) as well as incremental adjustability. Spring preload is adjusted manually on the fork but electronically on the rear shock. There are several proprietary algorithms programmed into the SAES system, including Suzuki Floating Ride Control, Suzuki Velocity Dependent Control, and Suzuki Deceleration Damping Control, which are designed to improve ride quality and chassis stability.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
Behind the windscreen is a 6.5-inch color TFT display, which shows pertinent info and controls all of the electronics as well as Suzuki’s mySPIN smartphone app. The handlebar is rubber-mounted to reduce vibration.

The S.I.R.S. electronics suite also includes the five-mode Suzuki Traction Control System with wheelie control and Roll Torque Control (adjusts engine output during cornering), an up/down quickshifter, Smart Cruise Control (which can be used with the quickshifter), cornering ABS, rear lift mitigation, the Suzuki Easy Start System, and Low RPM Assist. Everything is managed via menus on the 6.5-inch color TFT display, which also controls the Suzuki’s mySPIN smartphone app to display maps, phone calls, contacts, and music.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
Height of the rider seat is 33.3 inches, but a 32.7-inch low seat is available as an accessory. The rear luggage rack is standard.

Holding the GSX-S1000GX+ together is a GSX-R-derived twin-spar cast-aluminum frame and cast-aluminum swingarm, along with a tubular-steel trellis subframe. Suspension travel is 5.9 inches front and rear, which is more than the GSX-S1000GT (4.7/5.1 inches) but less than the V-Strom 1050 (6.3/6.3 inches). The taller suspension and lower footpegs increase the distance between the rider’s hip and foot by 0.6 inch, and seat height is 33.3 inches. For added comfort, the passenger seat is 1 inch wider and 0.4 inch thicker than the one on the GSX-S1000GT.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
No, we don’t get the color-matched wheels either. U.S. bikes will have black wheels. The 17-inchers are shod with Dunlop Roadsmart 2 tires.

Up front, a pair of Brembo radial-mount monoblock 4-piston calipers squeeze 310mm discs, and at the rear is a Nissin 1-piston caliper squeezing a 240mm disc. Cornering ABS is standard.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
The Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+ has a three-position windscreen.

Similar to its GT stablemate, the GSX-S1000GX+ has a sharply pointed front fairing with a pair of stacked LED headlights in the center and a pair of “cat eye” LED position lights. It also has angular side panels and radiator shrouds that match the sharply creased fuel tank, which holds 5.0 gallons of fuel. The wheels, engine, components, frame, swingarm radiator shrouds, low-slung exhaust pipe, handlebar, seat, and most of the side cases are finished in black. The front fender, front fairing, fuel tank, and top side case panels are finished in a dark Pearl Matte Shadow Green, which contrasts with the silver on the side panels and rear luggage rack and the gold fork tubes.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
The Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+ has a tall pillion seat so the passenger can see over the rider. The pillion seat is also wider and thicker than the one on the GSX-S1000GT+.

Touring amenities include standard handguards, a three-position windscreen, a rubber-mounted handlebar, a luggage rack that holds up to 13.2 lb, a pair of 25.7-liter side cases that hold up to 11 lb each, and a centerstand. Available accessories include heated grips, premium seats, a low seat (rider seat height 32.7 inches), small and large tankbags, axle sliders, frame sliders, billet levers, logoed tank pads, and tank protection foil.

2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+
Standard equipment on the 2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+ includes 25.7-liter side cases.

We selected the Suzuki GSX-S1000GT+ as our 2022 Motorcycle of the Year, and the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT was our 2021 Motorcycle of the Year. We look forward to seeing how the GSX-S1000GX+ stacks up against the latest Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ and Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE LT+.
